Our Founding Story
Well Women Trust began over 15 years ago, following the tragic suicide of a young mother in our community. Her death highlighted a devastating gap in maternal mental health support, and from that heartbreak, hope was born.
Founded as a grassroots, volunteer-led organisation operating out of Pukekohe Maternity Hospital, Well Women started as a small coffee group offering connection and comfort to local mothers. That circle of care quickly grew into two formal Peer Support Groups.
Today, Well Women runs five in-person Peer Support Groups across three locations, plus one online group, making our services accessible to more wāhine across Aotearoa.
In the past year alone, we’ve supported 197 women on their journey to wellness.
Our work goes far beyond support groups. We provide home visits, one-on-one support, a creative wellness course, home help, and a 24-hour phone line, all designed to walk alongside wāhine and their whānau when they need it most.
Well Women Trust exists to support wāhine and their whānau who are experiencing or are at risk of experiencing antenatal and/or postnatal distress.
Our free services also support those navigating other mental health challenges that are worsened during pregnancy and motherhood.
We are a small but mighty team of nine dedicated staff and four passionate volunteers, all deeply committed to nurturing the wellbeing of māmā in our communities.
Over 15 years of operation, not a single woman who has used our services has died by suicide.
That is the power of timely, compassionate, community-based care.
Cathy Fletcher - Founding Facilitator
Cathy has been part of the Well Women story since the beginning. She was instrumental in creating the service we have today. After 15 years of dedication to Well Women, helping many women on their journey to wellness, she has moved to Perth with her husband and children. Her legacy, and the service she helped build, will continue to help women facing the challenges of motherhood, to learn tools, strategies and hope for being well.
